Am I a fit? Questions Zimbabwean workers can ask about New Zealand’s new skilled residence routes
Visa guide · 2026-08-26 · 4 min read

For years most skilled workers had one track to New Zealand residence, with one set of thresholds. From 24 August 2026 there are two more, each aimed at a different type of person. If you are in Harare, Bulawayo or elsewhere in Zimbabwe, the easiest way to understand the reform is to ask the questions that decide your own position.
Why did New Zealand change course?
The old SMC rewarded qualifications and points, and it was weaker at recognising migrants with years of proven work behind them. Immigration New Zealand also had data showing some occupations being used to game the system through inflated titles and roles presented as skilled when they were not. Hence two prongs: open pathways built on real history, and tighten checks on roles tied to past abuse. The plan was flagged in September 2025 and detailed in March 2026.
Is my experience enough?
The Skilled Work Experience route covers genuinely skilled work at ANZSCO levels 1–3. It needs five years of relevant experience in total, with at least two of them in New Zealand, paid at 1.1 times the SMC median wage. The Trades and Technician route needs a Level 4+ qualification and four years of experience since qualifying, 1.5 years of it in New Zealand at the median wage. If your training came through HEXCO, check whether it meets the Level 4+ test, because a certificate is not automatically a New Zealand qualification or licence.
Is my role flagged?
Red-listed occupations, such as some accommodation management, generic management and health-and-beauty roles, cannot use either new pathway. They return to the traditional SMC route and need 1.5 times the median wage or a bachelor’s degree at Level 7+. Amber-listed roles, such as some ICT support and food service jobs, can still use Skilled Work Experience but need five years, two in New Zealand at 1.2 times the median wage instead of 1.1. Lists will be revisited regularly.
Which wage counts?
You need the SMC median wage that was current when you began accruing skilled experience, not a higher figure that may have crept up by the time you apply. A five-month grace period covers people who take a little time to move into skilled work after their visa is granted.
What else changed?
| Change | Detail |
|---|---|
| Postgraduate points | Level 8 or 9 generally needs a bachelor’s too; a New Zealand master’s for 5 points is the main exception; 6 points needs 30+ weeks of full-time New Zealand study and a bachelor’s |
| English tests | Valid for five years for applicants with recognised New Zealand occupational registration |
| Accountants | CPA Australia members able to perform Qualified Statutory Accountant work gain SMC eligibility outright |
| 2027 safety net | Those needing up to 12 more months of skilled experience can extend the Accredited Employer Work Visa |
Common mistakes Zimbabwean applicants make
- Ignoring the lists until after paying for an application.
- Letting titles and pay bands drift away from reality.
- Waiting too long to assemble payslips, role descriptions and evidence.
- Not taking advice from a licensed immigration adviser or a lawfully exempt person, or from a migration agent on the MARA register for Australia.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to wait until I am in New Zealand?
The experience rules require time in New Zealand at the stated wages, so plan the sequence with an adviser.
Are the lists permanent?
No, they will be revisited regularly.
Does a degree matter?
For Trades and Technician, the focus is a Level 4+ qualification, not a degree. A bachelor’s matters for some points claims and for the red-list route.
What is the grace period?
Five months, for those who take time to move into skilled work after their visa is granted.
Where do I start?
Check your occupation list, audit your wage history and gather documents.
