Level 5 to 7 qualification, NZD 5,000 in funds: could New Zealand's new graduate visa fit a Zimbabwean student?

A woman holds a black portfolio on a sunny university campus with Auckland’s skyline behind her.

Can a Zimbabwean studying in New Zealand work there afterwards? From November 16, 2026, two routes could help: a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa and a widened Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV). The answer for any student in Harare, Bulawayo or New Zealand depends on course level, study mode and timing, so here are the questions to ask.

Which qualification do I hold?

The new short-term visa suits holders of a level 5-7 qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) who studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks and are not eligible for a PSWV. The PSWV is now open to graduates of a level 7 Graduate Diploma who also hold a bachelor's degree. English-language, foundation and bridging graduates cannot use the short-term visa.

What do I get?

The short-term visa provides up to six months of open work rights, enough to look for a job, build local experience and possibly move to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). The PSWV length matches the Graduate Diploma study time and is capped at one year. Both are one-time grants.

What do I need to show?

  1. Proof of at least NZD 5,000 in available funds for the short-term visa.
  2. No earlier grant of either visa.
  3. Sign-off from MFAT or Education New Zealand if you studied under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme, where applicable.
  4. Medical and chest X-ray clearance if required for your length of stay.
  5. For the PSWV, full-time enrolment for the whole Graduate Diploma, with no cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning, plus the bachelor's degree certificate and an official transcript.

An overseas bachelor's degree does not need a separate International Qualification Assessment, although Immigration New Zealand may verify it.

What can I not do?

On the short-term visa you cannot own a business, and family cannot join as visa-holder dependants. They can apply separately as visitors or under other categories. PSWV holders, by contrast, can bring partners and dependent children on their own visas.

When must I apply?

Windows are three, six or twelve months after your student visa expires, depending on the pathway and course. The short-term visa must be lodged within three months, so a student visa that expired before August 16, 2026 has missed it. From November 16, 2026 everything goes through the upgraded Immigration Online platform, and paper PSWV applications on or before November 15, 2026 are processed under the old system.

What should I prepare at home?

Keep your ZIMSEC results, HEXCO certificates, passport and transcripts in order, and remember that a Zimbabwean qualification never automatically equals a New Zealand registration or licence. A police certificate from the Criminal Record Office is only requested when needed. Use a licensed immigration adviser or lawfully exempt person for New Zealand advice. Why timing is the real test

Eligibility often hinges on choices made well before graduation, such as whether the course was full-time and how it is classified on the NZQCF. If you are still studying, map your options now rather than after you finish, so you are not caught by a deadline that has already passed. If you are only starting, ask your provider how the course is classified and whether it is full-time, then note the answer in writing.

Also bear in mind that the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is aimed at people whose qualifications left them with no other work visa, so check the PSWV first. The order matters because the short-term visa is only open to those who are not already eligible for a PSWV.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the short-term visa as renewable.
  • Counting months from the wrong date.
  • Assuming family will be able to join.
  • Leaving the eligibility check until after the course.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single biggest trap?

Missing the window, because both visas are one-time grants.

Does the funds figure apply to the PSWV?

The NZD 5,000 requirement is listed for the short-term visa.

Is a bachelor's degree from home enough?

For the PSWV it counts alongside a level 7 Graduate Diploma, whenever earned, if genuine.

Why move to Immigration Online?

It promises better tracking and rules aligned with current policy.

Who decides my case?

Immigration New Zealand, using the official rules.
