Planning a move from Harare or Bulawayo? Run these checks before you believe Australia's migration debate

Australia's migration argument is loud, and readers in Zimbabwe often meet it second-hand. Before it shapes your plans, run through the checks below. They are based on the figures the Australian system itself produces.

Check the streams and the gates

  1. Know the six broad streams: visitor, student, family, skilled, refugee and compliance-related. Skilled covers employer-sponsored and independent visas.
  2. Remember the caps. The government sets planning limits for each stream every financial year.
  3. Expect two hurdles. Applicants normally have to pass once at application and again when the visa is granted.
  4. Understand the points test for independent skilled visas: it scores qualifications, work history and English proficiency, and only the highest scorers are invited to apply.

Partner visas need years of proof about money, housing and relationship history. Family sponsorship is narrow and generally means immediate family, each of whom must clear health and character screening. If you want to present your work history clearly, Build AI CV can help you set it out.

Check what protection really means

Anyone physically in Australia, whatever visa they arrived on, can lodge a protection application. That is a right to apply. It is not a likely approval. In 2024–25 there were 23,576 onshore applications and only 4,036 grants, and the onshore grant rate had dropped to roughly 16 per cent by April 2026.

Check the character and cancellation rules

All applicants pass a character test. Anyone who has lived in a country for 12 months or more must provide a police clearance from there, which for Zimbabwe means a police clearance from the Criminal Record Office. A criminal record sends a file into a specialist review that can take considerable time.

Once in Australia, a visa can be cancelled quickly. The Department of Home Affairs did so 37,033 times in the 2024–25 financial year. A charge is enough, with no conviction needed, and a prison sentence of more than 12 months triggers mandatory cancellation. Detention, run by private contractors, costs roughly $505,176 per person each year, over three times the roughly $160,600 spent on regular prisoners.

Check who pays and who receives

A 2021 Treasury study concluded migrants contribute more than they draw as a group. Visa application charges raised $4.15 billion in 2025, comfortably more than the roughly $1.4 billion the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax produced in 2023–24. Temporary residents for tax purposes earned $230 billion in personal taxable income between 2019 and 2022, and farms rely on migrant labour at harvest.

On the receiving side, Medicare usually starts with permanent residency or an application for it, and some temporary visa holders qualify. Most temporary migrants, refugees excepted, cannot get JobSeeker or the aged pension until they meet residency requirements, followed by a waiting period of up to four years. Some people hold temporary visas for more than a decade. Public school fees can apply depending on state and subclass.

Check your own paperwork

Keep ZIMSEC and HEXCO certificates, employer letters and identity documents together and in order. Local qualifications are never an automatic match for an Australian licence or skills assessment. Common mistakes to steer clear of

  • Believing that the protection route is easy to use as a shortcut.
  • Waiting for a request before ordering police clearance.
  • Planning your budget around benefits you may not be able to claim.
  • Taking advice from anyone other than a migration agent registered with MARA.

Frequently asked questions

Is Australia's skilled stream open to anyone with a trade?

The stream is open to applicants who meet each visa's rules. Qualification assessment is a separate step.

Do I need a police clearance from Zimbabwe?

If you have lived there for 12 months or more, yes, you must produce one.

What happens if I am charged with an offence?

A charge can be enough for the department to cancel a visa and detain a person.

Can temporary residents use Medicare?

Some can, depending on the visa. Generally it opens with permanent residency or an application for it.

How do I find reliable advice?

Use official government pages and a migration agent registered with MARA.

Key takeaways

  • Six streams, caps and two-stage checks make the system tight.
  • Protection grants are rare and cancellations are frequent.
